Things to do with Kids in Solomons Maryland in the Spring

The best part of memories is making them, and a trip to Solomons, MD is sure to set the stage for making fun memories with your family.

Kids (and kids at heart) will find all sorts of things to delight their spirits as they explore the beautiful town of Solomons Island. Solomons, a well-known boating center situated where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, is popular among visitors year-round.

If you’re wondering whether visiting Solomons with kids in tow will be worth your while, we can assure you that it will. Today we’re sharing some of our favorite family-friendly things to do with kids in Solomons in the spring!

Calvert Marine Museum and Drum Point Lighthouse

This award-winning museum tells the story of Chesapeake Bay through engaging exhibits, including a Discovery Room where children can search for real fossils, climb a model lighthouse, and play dress-up in the lighthouse keeper’s house. Real animals from stingrays to otters are part of the museum as well, and children can pet some of these creatures in a touch tank. For a small donation, kids can even try their hand at toy boat building in the afternoons.

Outside, you can explore boardwalks over a natural saltmarsh and climb the Drum Point Lighthouse. In addition, the museum has special programming nearly every day – so there’s a good chance you can see something new every time you visit.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

Perhaps known as the best place in Maryland to search for fossils and shark teeth, Calvert Cliffs State Park is a beautiful spot to explore with kids. The trail from the primary parking lot to the beach is a little under two miles, and is doable with strollers or wagons.

While it might be too chilly to take a swim if you’re visiting in the springtime, there will still be more than enough to do with digging for fossils and shark teeth, fishing, exploring, and testing out the park’s accessible recycled tire playground.

If you get muddy, come back to the Solomons Inn Resort + Marina to clean up in your room or in the convenient outdoor bath house.

Water adventures

Boating, sailing, yachting, fishing, and crabbing are a few of the water adventure opportunities that abound in Solomons. Patience Sportfishing is one great outfitter to check out if you’re interested in fishing as a family.

If you’d like to rent a pontoon or another boat to cruise the Patuxent River and explore the many hidden coves and beautiful locales that Solomons has to offer, stop by Solomons Boat Rental. At Sail Solomons, you will find yacht charters, an outstanding sailing school, and private sailing lessons.

Family-Friendly Restaurants

We’re partial to Isaac’s Restaurant when it comes to dining, especially since it’s a convenient, on-site restaurant at Solomons Inn. With a casual atmosphere and American fare and seafood on the menu, you can enjoy outdoor dining when the weather is welcoming. Whether you sit inside or outside you’ll have a lovely view of the water.

Another great waterfront dining option is The Lighthouse Restaurant & Dock Bar, which offers a delicious kids’ menu with familiar favorites like chicken tenders and macaroni and cheese, along with seafood like snow crab legs.

Boomerang’s Ribs and Seafood is a local favorite for barbecue and baby back ribs. Their menu has plenty of other options like burgers, tacos, sandwiches, and more, so your kids are sure to find something to suit their palate.

Ice Cream Shops

Any time is a great time for ice cream, right? Treat your kids to soft-serve ice cream, shaved ice, sundaes, milkshakes, or ice cream floats at Cone Island

Another good ice cream stop is at Bunky’s Charter Boat Fishing and Tackle. Plus, they’re a great place for charter fishing, cruises, and renting boats and kayaks!

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center

Inside, you’ll find rotating gallery exhibitions and a maker lab where children can create things out of recycled materials. Take time to explore the quarter-mile walking path through the woods and past a variety of sculptures. Visitors are welcome to draw, sketch, and photograph the gorgeous views in the garden or relax with a picnic.

Springtime is gnome and fairy season at Annmarie, so your kids will be able to spot tiny gnome homes and fairy houses tucked throughout the gardens. The popular Fairy & Gnome Home Festival is set for April 24, where kids can take unicorn rides, meet Gus the Gnome, frolic in the Fairy Lolly, build a fairy house or rock tower, and more.

Playgrounds

If you know, you know: when on a trip with young kids, playground stops are a must! The Solomons Riverwalk is a beautiful place to stroll, watch boats, and take a stop at the Solomons Island Playground to burn off energy. You’ll find a stroller-friendly walking path at Cove Point Park, along with yet another terrific playground.

Even if you happen to visit on a rainy day, your kids can still get exercise and run around at the Imaginarium. This large, interactive indoor play space was designed by a teacher, and signing up for a time slot online in advance is recommended.

One of the best parts of any vacation as a kid is staying at a hotel with a pool, and Solomons Inn Resort and Marina has a junior Olympic size pool for you and your kids to enjoy.
